National Monuments Modified by Herbert Hoover via the Antiquities Act:

March 4, 1929, to March 3, 1933

 

Craters of the Moon, ID, Proclamation No. 1916, 46 Stat. 3029 (July 9, 1930)

Added “In township 2 north, range 24 east, lot 1, section 28.”

Unlike all of the other national monument establishments/modifications in this study’s compilation, the text of this proclamation does not specifically note that Hoover acted under the authority of the Antiquities Act of 1906.

This modification is listed on the NPS Antiquities Act Centennial table describing Craters of the Moon, though here, too, no acreage is listed.

 

Petrified Forest, AZ, Proclamation No. 1927, 46 Stat. 3040 (Nov. 14, 1930)

Added “approximately 11,010 acres.”

 

Aztec Ruins, NM, Proclamation No. 1928, 46 Stat. 3040 (Dec. 19, 1930)

Added two tracts, one of “approximately 1.8 acres” and one of “6.8788 acres.”

 

Pinnacles, CA, Proclamation No. 1948, 47 Stat. 2451 (Apr. 13, 1931)

Added “1,926.35 acres.”

(NPS Antiquities Act Centennial does not include Hoover’s addition on its list describing Pinnacles.)

 

Katmai, AK, Proclamation No. 1950, 47 Stat. 2453 (Apr. 24, 1931)

Added “certain adjoining lands for the purpose of including within said monument additional lands on which there are located features of historical and scientific interest and for the protection of the brown bear, moose, and other wild animals” which are listed using latitude, longitude, and natural features, and which are measured in miles.

(NPS Antiquities Act Centennial does not include Hoover’s addition on its list describing Katmai.)

 

Petrified Forest, AZ, Proclamation No. 1975, 47 Stat. 2486 (Nov. 30, 1931)

Added “That portion of the W.½ NW.¼ sec. 9 lying south and east of the southern boundary of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Co.’s right of way in T. 18 N., R. 24 E., Gila and Salt River meridian.”

(NPS Antiquities Act Centennial does not include this Hoover addition on its list describing Petrified Forest.)

 

Bandelier, NM, Proclamation No. 1991, 47 Stat. 2503 (Feb. 25, 1932)

Added the following area: “T. 19 N., R. 7 E., south half of secs. 7, 8, and 9; secs. 16 to 21 inclusive; fractional secs. 28, 29, and 30; All lands in unsurveyed Tps. 17 and 18 N., R. 6 E., lying north of the Canada de Cochiti Grant, south of the Ramon Vigil Grant, and west of the Rio Grande River.”

(NPS Antiquities Act Centennial does not include Hoover’s addition on its list describing Bandelier.)

 

Scotts Bluff, NE, Proclamation No. 1999, 47 Stat. 2512 (June 1, 1932)

Added “the following-described lands in Nebraska” which are listed using the township and range system.

(NPS Antiquities Act Centennial does not include Hoover’s addition on its list describing Scotts Bluff.)

 

Petrified Forest, AZ, Proclamation No. 2011, 47 Stat. 2532 (Sept. 23, 1932)

Added “approximately 53,300 acres.”

(NPS Antiquities Act Centennial also does not include this Hoover addition on its list describing Petrified Forest.)

 

Colorado, CO, Proclamation No. 2037, 47 Stat. 2563 (Mar. 3, 1933)

Added “such additional lands in Colorado be, and the same are hereby, added to and made a part of the Colorado National Monument, and that the boundaries of the said monument as hereby changed are described” on three subsequent pages of text using the township and range system.

(NPS Antiquities Act Centennial does not include Hoover’s addition on its list describing Colorado.)
