Monuments Modified November 22, 1963, to January 20, 1969

National Monuments Modified by Lyndon B. Johnson via the Antiquities Act:

November 22, 1963, to January 20, 1969

Statue of Liberty, NY, Proclamation No. 3656, 79 Stat. 1490 (May 11, 1965)

Added “Ellis Island, consisting of approximately 27.5 acres . . . [and] submerged lands in the rectangle surrounding the island . . . aggregating 48 acres” to the existing Statue of Liberty National Monument.

Other NPS sources refer to this as Fort Wood or Ellis Island (e.g., http://www.nps.gov/history/archeology/sites/antiquities/MonumentsList.htm).

(NPS Antiquities Act Centennial lists this LBJ modification under “Fort Wood National Monument” and states that LBJ’s 1965 proclamation “redesignated Statue of Liberty NM.”)
