Monuments Established January 20, 2001, to January 20, 2009

National Monuments Established by George W. Bush via the Antiquities Act:

January 20, 2001, to January 20, 2009

Governors Island, NY, Proclamation No. 7647, 68 Fed. Reg. 7053 (February 7, 2003)

Confirmed that the monument designation process conformed with “Public Law 105-33, sec. 9101, 111 Stat. 670 (Aug. 5, 1997).”

Added approximately two acres; monument area now “approximately 22 acres.”

Re-proclaimed, following from Clinton’s Governors Island Proclamation No. 7402.

This example of a president using the Antiquities Act to re-proclaim a monument appears to have precedent: “In February 1916, President Wilson was obliged to proclaim [Natural Bridges] monument again because the first survey had been incorrect.” Source: Ise 1961, page 156.
